As the worlds, number one Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Tribute act we’re obviously huge fans of the hit musical Jersey Boys, but how does it compare to the 2014 movie release.
‘Movie adaptations and remakes, of both books and musicals, often deviate from the source material in varying degrees and this is often one of the main sources of debate and sometimes their success or failure.
Play it safe and you could risk losing your audience’s attention, change it up too much and the die-hard fans will no doubt not be happy. It certainly seems a tough balance to get right and even as Four Seasons mega fans, we’re not entirely sure about this one.
Probably the world’s most successful Musical to movie adaptations was the 2014 release of Les Misérables. With a star studded cast, including Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe & Anne Hathaway the movie was directed by Cameron Machinto and has grossed over $441 million worldwide.
On the other hand, Cats – The Musical was recently adapted into a movie in 2019 and was reviewed by critics and audience members as one of the worst adaptions of all time, with stars of the film seeming to agree.
Jersey Boys Movie by Clint Eastwood
The Jersey Boys movie, from 2014, was directed by Clint Eastwood and starred Vincent Piazza as Tommy DeVito and John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli is another musical to movie adaptations that received mixed reviews.
However, unlike many book adaptations, the criticisms do not appear to be from the musical being changed too much, and the musical itself is often regarded as being an accurate portrayal of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
With Frankie Valli previously stating:
“One of the things I learned really quickly was that it was really important if they were going to do a story about your life … at least 98 percent of it had to be the real truth,”
Jersey Boys Movie Accuracy
The movie was faithful to the musical in many ways and it doesn’t stray far from the true story on which it’s based. Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, who wrote the musical, also wrote the film’s screenplay and Frankie Vialli was an executive producer.
In fact, some critics argue that the movie doesn’t stand out as anything special.
Unfortunately many critics felt the movie lacked the electric excitement of the musical with it only achieving 55 on Metascore. As for audience opinion, as always with movies, these range from exceptional to awful.
While the movie may not have achieved the success of the West End and Broadway Musical, for fans of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons it certainly was a treat to have the groups incredible back story brought to the silver screen and reaching new audiences.
